Following on from a great cleanup dive, a couple of our keen divers headed out to Fortesque Bay to hunt for the Giant Kelp Forests. It didn't disappoint, and these photos are proof that the kelp is on the mend.
For those that have been regularly diving Fortesque Bay over the last few years, you would have noticed the kelp forests slowing deteriorating. Whether this is due to slightly warmer waters throughout the winter months, or just the life-cycle around the environment, the good news is that the forests are coming back in full force!
Water temp sat around 12 degrees, with visibility slightly over 10m. Launching from the rocky point just north of the boat ramp, place your bearing north/slightly north east and swim out 50m to hit the Giant Kelp Forests.
While gliding through the kelp which rises up 15m to hit the surface, stay on the lookout for the local Draughtboard sharks that inhabit the area. Harmless little creatures that will swim in your slipstream, sink into the kelp and observe, or on the rare occasion you can play hide and seek through the forests! If you haven't been down and hit the bay, you are missing out!
