The Actaeon Islands are a small group of islands at the southern entrance to the D’Entrecasteaux Channel between Bruny Island and mainland Tasmania.

Described as a botanical, zoological, ornithological, fisheries, geoheritage and maritime heritage wonderland this trip is a fantastic one. Weather is looking good – get on it!

This area is home to some of the last easily accessible kelp forest (Macrocystis pyrifera). As the waters in Tasmania warm they aren’t expected to remain here for long. The Ziebell’s Handfish may be found on the edge of ginat kelp forests. When growth is vigorous, the kelp forest is crowned by a dense surface canopy. The canopy acts as a nursery for juvenile fishes, attracting swirling schools of small bait fish and predatory fish.

We will be meeting at the Dive Shed at 6.30am, driving to either Gordon or charlottes cove to launch the boat.

This is a long boat drive and there can be a bit or swell in this area so please consider your own safety and prepare accordingly. There might also be a bit of rain around.

We’ll either do two dives in the Kelp forest or do a second dive on the way back.
