Second attempt to run down and dive the giant kelp forests of Southern Tas – Actaeon Is, Southport, Rechearche Bay, Southport (dive-site depending on weather on the day).
This area is home to some of the last easily accessible kelp forest (Macrocystis pyrifera). As the waters in Tasmania warm they aren’t expected to remain here for long. When growth is vigorous, the kelp forest is crowned by a dense surface canopy. The canopy acts as a nursery for juvenile fishes, attracting swirling schools of small bait fish and predatory fish.
The Actaeon Islands are a small group of islands at the southern entrance to the D’Entrecasteaux Channel between Bruny Island and mainland Tasmania.
Described as a botanical, zoological, ornithological, fisheries, geoheritage and maritime heritage wonderland this trip is a fantastic one – get on it!
We will be meeting at the Dive Shed at 7.00am.
This is a long boat drive and there can be a bit or swell in this area so please consider your own safety and prepare accordingly.
Diving mid-winter so bring windproof tops.
