2023 marks the ninth year of the historic global celebration and, as the event has grown to be the largest single day of diving on the planet, we will expand our efforts to mobilize the entire dive community in Tasmania to take-action for the ocean this time in Hobart.
This PADI Women’s Dive Day the Tasmanian Mermaids are running a ‘Dive Against Debris’ event in the Bellerive Yacht Club Marina. We would love to invite all divers to join the Mermaids Crew to remove as much debris from the ocean as we can.
We will be focusing on diving around the marina and foreshore area where in past events there have been belt sanders, shopping trolleys, car tyres, lead-acid batteries and more pulled from the seafloor.
We have the incredible team at Total Dive Solutions supporting us with a vessel on the day to help lift the heavier items out with a winch. On top of people below and above the surface we are keen to have a strong shore crew also, these people can help divers and vessels off-load debris, sort debris and collect data for us on the day.
In 2023 The Tasmanian Mermaids will be raising funds for Project Hiu – an initiative founded by Byron local Madison Stewart, based in Lombok, Indonesia that works to provide an alternative income for shark fishermen, replacing it with eco-tourism. Project Hiu is founded on the recognition that the very solution to saving sharks, lay with the men raised to kill them.

Cannot wait to see you all in the water this July!
